In this fast paced world computers are becoming more vital in daily life. However, even given their importance computers are still treated with less regard then let's say an inexpensive "Light Bulb" or a roll of "Toilet Paper". Certainly we can all agree that things are replaceable unlike human lives. But, at the same time we must also agree it is quite different to spend $0.50 - $1.00 and $400 - $1,000 to replace an object and one that has become such a cornerstone of modern living.

1)  Make sure your computer has enough space around it to allow even air flow. In the case of a Tower/Mid-Tower model Keep your main computer unit (sometimes referred to as a CPU or Tower) elevated off the floor by at least six (6) inches.  Most decent computer desks have compartments for the main unit that are elevated six (6) to eight (8) inches. Although, many wal-mart specials look fairly decent with elevation of only four (4) inches, this may cut down your computers lifespan considerably. Elevate desktops, mini-PCs (i.e. MacMini, Cube, XPC Shuttle), and laptops off hard services by at least 2 - 3 inches.

2) Cleaning your system out can be a major life-saver as well as keeping your system running for years. It is important you get your computer checked out and maintained by a professional every six to eight months. Doing so may greatly reduce the risk of early computer failure and in some cases electrical fire. Yes with enough dust collecting inside your computer the remote possibility of electrical fire does exist. It is an extremely small chance, but one that we should all take seriously. 3) Malware (Spyware, Adware, Viruses, Trojans, Etc.) can be another major problem. In fact more so then computer viruses. It is imperitive to get your computer checked and cleaned of Viruses, Malware (Adware, Spyware, etc.), and Trojans every six to eight months. Unless you do this chances are you can start to notice significant performance issues before your first year of ownership is up. More to the point is that most Virus programs are hosted by your computers OS. For PCs this means Windows. If Windows has been taken over by at least one Trojan your Virus program may be made useless and your computer could be succeptable to all kinds of bad programs finding their way onto your hard drive. This is why it is majorly important you get a professional check-up which circumvents the software installed on your computer. This will kill any maliscious software which has made its way into your computer and allow it to run like new (or mostly like new) again. (Part of the Six point inspection)

4) Software selection can be another major issue which may lengthen or shorten your computers life. Choosing the right software and software upgrades can be as important as how your computer is built and what components are inside. Many people buy any old program or install every Microsoft update possible. In the case of Microsoft most updates are normally presented to the public long before they're ready for public consumption. This is because of Microsoft's desire to beat the competition to market with little regard for quality control. So the very update you install may make your Windows unbootable.
